How to Get Paint Out of Carpet: The Ultimate Guide for a Spotless Home

Paint and carpet don't get along, but a spill isn't the end of your floor. Maybe you're in the middle of repainting a room in your Nashville home, or maybe the kids got a little too creative with craft supplies. Either way, the trick is to move fast and pick the right method for the kind of paint you're dealing with. We've pulled wet latex, dried acrylic, and stubborn oil-based paint out of carpets all over Middle Tennessee, so here's what actually works.

Prep the Area First

Take a couple of minutes before you grab any cleaner. Block off the spill so nobody steps in it and tracks paint across the house. If you can slide a plastic bag or tarp under a rug, do it, since that keeps paint from soaking into the subfloor. Crack a window and turn on a fan, especially if it's oil-based, to clear the fumes and help things dry later. Renting your place? Snap a photo of the damage before you start, just in case.

Know Your Paint

Not all paint behaves the same way on carpet fibers.

  • Latex (water-based): The easiest to clean, especially while wet. Dish soap and water usually do the job. The longer it sits, the deeper it sinks in.
  • Acrylic: Similar to latex, but it dries faster and grips harder because of the plastic polymers in it. Once it dries it forms a flexible coating that's tougher to pull up.
  • Oil-based: The hardest of the bunch. It needs a solvent, and it works its way deep into the pile. Ventilate the room and wear gloves.

Step by Step

1. Act fast. Blot the spill with a clean white cloth or paper towel. Don't press hard or smear it. For a big spill, work from the outside edges in so you don't spread it.

2. Check the label. Confirm whether it's latex, acrylic, or oil-based. That decides everything that comes next.

3. Mix your solution. For latex or acrylic, stir 1 teaspoon of dish soap into a cup of warm water. For oil-based, dampen a cloth with a little mineral spirits or acetone, and keep the room ventilated.

4. Dab, don't scrub. Blot from the edges inward, switching to a clean part of the cloth each pass. This takes patience. For dried paint, let the solution sit a few minutes before you blot.

5. Rinse and dry. Wipe the spot with a cloth dampened in cold water, blot it dry with paper towels, and aim a fan at it. Stay off the area until it's fully dry.

Tough or Dried Paint

If the spill went unnoticed for a while, loosen dried paint first with a spoon or an old credit card. Apply your solution and let it soak 5 to 10 minutes before blotting. You'll probably need a few passes, so don't rush it. Skip bleach and ammonia, since they can burn or lighten carpet fibers. Always test any cleaner in a hidden corner first, and dry the spot well, because damp carpet is where mold gets started.

A Word on Prevention

Most spills are avoidable. Lay down drop cloths and tape the edges so they don't slide. Pull up area rugs before you paint, keep pets and kids out of the work zone, and seal those cans the second you're done with them.

Your Carpet Type Matters Too

How aggressive you can get depends on what's underfoot. Nylon is durable and forgiving. Polyester resists most stains but struggles with oil-based paint. Wool needs a gentle hand. Olefin, common in Nashville basements, shrugs off moisture but can stain more easily.
